Thomas Cleland Dawson The South American Republics (Vol. 1&2)

The aim of this book is to offer a comprehensive approach to the history of the South American republics since the South American histories written before were mostly treating of special periods, and few authorities existed for post-revolution times. One of the main questions he tried to answer was why there were so many revolutions in South American countries. Constitutional traditions, inherited from Spain and Portugal, implanted a tendency toward disintegration; Spanish and Portuguese tyranny bred in the people a distrust of all rulers and governments; the war of independence brought to the front military adventurers; civil disorders were inevitable, and the search for forms of government that should be final and stable has been very painful. On the other hand, the generous impulse that prompted the movement toward independence has grown into an earnest desire for ordered liberty, which was steadily spreading among all classes, resulting in a slow evolution toward republicanism. Volume 1: Argentina: The Argentine Land The Spanish Colonial System Completion of the War of Independence The Era of Civil Wars The Modern Argentine Paraguay: Paraguay Until 1632 The Jesuit Republic and Colonial Paraguay The War Uruguay: Portuguese Aggressions and the Settlement of the Country The Revolution Independence and Civil War Brazil: Discovery Early Colonization Independence Events of 1849 to 1864 Republicanism and Emancipation Volume 2: Peru: The Inca Empire The Spanish Conquest The Wars of Independence Chile: The Spanish Conquest The Colonial Period The War of Independence The Formative Period Bolivia: The Conquest and the Mines The War of Independence Bolivia Independent Ecuador: The Spanish Conquest The War of Independence The Formation of Ecuador Modern Ecuador Venezuela: Conquest, Settlement, and Colonial Days The Revolt Modern Venezuela Colombia: Conquest and Settlement Colonial Times The War against Spain Modern Colombia Panama: The Events Leading to Independence

Robert J. Sternberg The Modern Land-Grant University

In an increasingly competitive higher education environment, Americas public universities are seeking ways to differentiate themselves. This book suggests that a hopeful vision of what a university should be lies in a reexamination of the land-grant mission, the common system of values originally set forth in the Morrill Land Grant Acts of 1862 and 1890, which established a new system of practically oriented higher learning across the United States. While hard to define, these values are often expressed by the one hundred or so institutions that currently define themselves as land grants under the three pillars of research, teaching, and engagement/extension.In order to understand the unique character of a modern land-grant institution, this book focuses especially but not exclusively on the multiple components of a single organization, Oklahoma State University, founded in 1890 and currently enrolling 35,000 students across five campuses. Contributors from across the university focus on what the land-grant mission means to them in their daily endeavors, whether that be crafting the undergraduate academic experience, stimulating research, or engaging with the community through extension activities. The twenty contributions are divided into four parts, exploring in turn the core mission of the modern land-grant university, the university environment, the universitys public value, and its accountability. The volume ends with an epilogue by the editor, which summarizes the values underlying the activities of land-grant institutions. In a time of uncertainty in higher education, this volume provides a helpful overview of the many different types of value public universities bring to American society. It also offers a powerful vision of a future founded on land-grant ideas that will be inspiring to university administrators and trustees, other educational policymakers, and faculty and staff, especially those fortunate enough to be part of land-grant institutions.

Washington Irving The Spanish Account: Tales of the Alhambra & Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada (Unabridged)

Washington Irving The Spanish Account: Tales of the Alhambra & Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada

Группа авторов The Improbable Conquest

The Improbable Conquest offers translations of a series of little-known letters from the chaotic Spanish conquest of the Río de la Plata region, uncovering a rich and understudied historical resource. These letters were written by a wide variety of individuals, including clergy, military officers, and the region’s first governor, Pedro de Mendoza. There is also an exceptional contribution from Isabel de Guevara, one of the few women involved in the conquest to have recorded her experiences. Writing about the conditions of settlements and expeditions, these individuals vividly expose the less glamorous side of the conquest, narrating in detail various misfortunes, infighting, corruption, and complaints. Their letters further reveal the colony’s fraught relationship with the native peoples it sought to colonize, giving insight into the complexities of the conquest and the colonization process. Pablo García Loaeza and Victoria Garrett provide an introduction to the history of the region and the conquest’s key players, as well as a timeline and a glossary explaining difficult and archaic Spanish terms.
